Part III: Oddities of Daventry

Hoyle's Official Book of Games, Volume 1-3
(PC, 1989-1992)

With King's Quest easily being Sierra's most beloved series at the time, it didn't make any business sense NOT to try and squeeze as much out of the Royal Family of Daventry as possible. One such way was to include King's Quest characters in their new series of card and board games, Hoyle's Official Book of Games. Both King Graham and Princess Rosella make themselves known as leisurely card players in Volume 1. Although no special characters appear in Volume 2, Volume 3 is packed with even more Sierra faces than ever before, keeping Graham and Rosella while adding Mordack (King's Quest V) and Lolotte (King's Quest IV). Of course, other Sierra characters are featured as well, including Larry Laffer from the Leisure Suit Larry series and Roger Wilco of Space Quest fame. As a sidenote, if you're ever up for a game of Old Maid, Graham and Rosella are pretty easy to beat.

King Graham's Board Game Challenge: Checkers & Backgammon
(PC, 1993)

Um... yeah, okay. I don't know why games like this exist, but for whatever reason, there's a combination checkers/backgammon game with King Graham's face planted on it, both as a separate budget title under the "Crazy Nick's Picks" lineup and as an inclusion with the King's Quest Collection. I guess when he's not adventuring, he's loafing at the castle playing board games with whoever will give him the time of day. This is silly.

Quest for Daventry
(PC, 1993)

The same year that King Graham's Board Game Challenge was released, our beloved patriarch managed to wedge his way into yet another genre of gaming: pinball! In the game Take A Break! Pinball, published by Sierra, there are numerous boards featuring Sierra characters, one of which is based on King's Quest V. There are a number of different goals from the original game, such as "Seek Crispin's Counsel", "Ingratiate Queen Icebella", and "Flipper the Flipper to Mordack Island". If you like old computer pinball games, this one's for you.

King's Questions
(PC, 1994)

Included with copies of the King's Quest Collection, this little mini-game takes place in the wonderful kingdom of Daventry, where the crew of Prince Alexander's ship sit around, drinking stale ale and asking each other trivia questions about the adventures. What they don't realize, however, is that their success in responding to the questions will help or hinder their ability to make it back to Daventry safely. How? I really have no idea. But I guess the real point is to test YOUR King's Quest knowledge! And you'd better seriously know the series inside and out, including "Wizard and the Princess", and all the backstories in between, because this game's questions may tear you a new navel.
