Try explaining this one to your mother.

Or girlfriend, for that matter. Who am I kidding, only loners like me play games like this! Gal*Gun: Double Peace is what happens when you cross an on-rails shooter like House of the Dead with the daydreams of a sex-crazed schoolgirl fetishist. Less Virtua Cop, more Virtua Cop "A Feel". Firing thousands of love bullets at completely smitten anime chicks, and not once being creeped out by it, have I reached a new stage of human evolution?

You assume the role of Houdai, a relatively boring and unpopular guy, who is struck by an angel's love arrow and is now wanted by every girl in school, even the teachers! YIKES! What is this, "My Harem Highschool - The Ken Akamatsu Story"? To fend them off, you shoot the girls with "pheromone shots" until they fall to the floor writhing around in pure ecstasy.

You are the orgasm addict handing out the erotic candy of love. Nothing wrong with this at all. Nuh-uh.

Whether Houdai ends up with one of his childhood crushes, or one of the other girls in the school, is up to you! The fun is in how you go about "penetrating the heart wall" of your true love. What you say, how well you play and your stats, all vastly affect the outcome. You might end up with your destined lover, Shinobu, or you might break free of fate's shackles and get with her sister Maya. Or you might end up with a tasty teacher.

It just blows my mind that this game received a localization and is only rated PEGI 16 despite its strong references to sex. Not complaining though!

Doki Doki Field Activate!!

So like I said, the main gameplay is on rails. Girls will jump out from behind objects or walk onscreen, and you use that limited amount of time when they're doing anything to search out their "weakest point" and hit them there for extra points. Sometimes, on your journey around the school grounds, you will find school uniforms or hidden items. Collecting these also earns you points and helps you progress through several side quests.

However, as much content as there is, this game is most definitely samey, repetitive, and eventually becomes a grind. Not the sexy kind, no sir! And the gameplay could do with being just that little bit faster, because it feels like Houdai is slug-crawling around the whole school. At least they could have made it so you can jaunt a little quicker around stages you've played before?

After a bunch of stages you'll have a boss encounter or some kind of mini-game, which helps change the pace and stop the game from feeling like a steady A to B race. The battles and mini-games are cycle-driven affairs, and typically consist of three parts, making them samey too.

While all story text is translated into English, any clips that didn't originally receive subtitles play out in Japanese without any visual feedback. So entire boss sequences and sections are voiced but there is no translation for them. It seems that games which are quickly localised (just text translation) tend to have this problem in spades. Recently, Arslan: The Warriors of Legend also suffered from this shortsighted mistake, by having voice clips play over in-game cutscenes but the text boxes would disappear. Similar issues abound here.

This game will appeal to a certain demographic. If you think this game is "dumb", then it isn't for you, no matter what. However, if you have even the slightest feeling you might enjoy this, I say go for it. You absolutely must give this ridiculous game a go.
