Part II: Lost Lufia

Esteel
(NEC PC98)

I can't find too much detailed info on Esteel, but from what I've read of it, this was the REAL first game by Neverland. The company later switched over to SNES development, and Esteel faded into the darkness... only to eventually become Lufia & the Fortress of Doom.
Lufia & the Fortress of Doom
(Sega Genesis)

A port of the SNES version of this game was coming to the Sega Genesis in 1994 (and later delayed to the spring of 1995), and it was even advertised in several magazines. Taito later cancelled this port. We're not sure why.
Lufia III: Ruins Chaser
(PlayStation)

Prior to declaring bankruptcy, the Japanese publisher Nihon-Flex had been actively engaging themselves in designing the next game in the Lufia series for the popular PlayStation console, and were likely working on it as late as 2000. When the company floundered, it was initially assumed that all hope was lost for the third Lufia title. However, original Lufia developer Neverland eventually picked up where they had left off when Taito picked up the Japanese publishing rights (and Natsume in North America). After significant story and character editing (and much graphical changes), it was ported to the Game Boy Color and became "Lufia: The Legend Returns". No screenshots were ever made available of the PlayStation version in progress.
Lufia: Beginning of a Legend
(Game Boy Color)

This game was in development at the same time as Lufia: Ruins Chaser, but was unfortunately cancelled for unknown reasons. This would have been a prequel to Lufia II, documenting Maxim's life, long before the Sinistrals arrived. Other than this basic plot aspect, very little is known about the game.
