Part V: The Probotector
For a long time, European audiences were not treated to the same series that North American and Japanese audiences were enjoying. Particularly in Germany, the depiction of human violence in video games was (for a long while) prohibited in Europe. Many video games had to change either the title of the game, or the content found within, or both. For example, the popular cartoon series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" had spawned a variety of video games, but since the notion of ninjas spawn violent imagery, they had to be referred to as the "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" until the mid-1990s. The Contra series also fell prey to this rule. Any humans in Contra games were replaced with robots, and the name 'Contra' was replaced with the name 'Probotector'. The Probotector series lasted until the release of Probotector for the Sega Genesis (also known as 'Contra: Hard Corps' elsewhere), after which any future Contra games were released with their original titles and content intact.

Probotector (NES)
Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces (NES)
Super Probotector: Alien Rebels (SNES)
Probotector 2 (GB)
Probotector (GB)
Probotector (GENESIS)

Thus concludes this retrospective on the bullet-riddled Contra series. It is unclear where the future of the series lies, but if Contra 4 proves to have any success, you can rest assured that more games will be produced. And knowing the way of the video game industry, there will be a Contra racing game in the next ten years. However, the classic games are being made available for future generations of gamers on the Wii U's Virtual Console and on Xbox Live; they will now get to see what they missed by not being born earlier during a time when games were tough and that's the way we liked 'em, dagnabbit!

SIDENOTE: I know I did not make mention of the cancelled Nintendo 64 game, tentatively titled 'Contra Spirits 64', because there just isn't enough information about it to make a definitive summary. I only know that it was cancelled in 1998.
