Part IV: The Futurismo

Contra: Shattered Soldier
(PS2, 2002)

Without fail, this series managed to claw its way onto the PlayStation 2 (just like pretty much any franchise that didn't have Nintendo or Microsoft stamped on it). Developed in-house, Contra: Shattered Soldier takes three-dimensional graphics and implants them on a 2D plane, finding a healthy medium between the classic and modern styles of play. This time around, our good buddy Bill has been convicted of killing his partner Lance (as well as the majority of the human population), and has been sentenced for a good long time. But with the arrival of Blood Falcon, yet another alien organization with the intent of causing harm to humanity, Bill is released to save the world yet again. Although you cannot pick up different weapons, you start off with three basic ones that can be charged and enhanced. This game also introduces a hit rate counter; defeating more enemies increases this rate and gives you a better ending, thus giving you incentive to kill more! Passive players will not be happy about that, nor will they be amused by the fact that this game is amazingly difficult (to play, not to find, actually...).

Neo Contra
(PS2, 2004)

Those players who couldn't handle the raw action and amped difficulty of Contra: Shattered Soldier were granted a boon with the release of Neo Contra two years later. The Earth has been transformed into a planet for storing criminals only, and only Bill Rizer can set things straight with Earth's corrupt government (after being resurrected from his frozen slumber, that is). Neo Contra is a heck of a lot easier than its predecessor, what with all the extra lives and continues you get. Yet it also seems like quite a different game, mainly due to the fact that any evidence of side-scrolling is forgotten in favour of overhead view stages only. A bonus lock-on mechanism feature has also been added to aid in the takedown of airborne foes. For those who seek a dark mind-bogglingly hard quest, you will be disappointed. For the rest, Neo Contra is here.
